Performance in Canvas and SVG is a subject I have seen many times
before.
The benchmarks I have for them are a little bit old and I am not sure
that the tests can be taken as a general reference.

Does anyone know of better benchmarks?

I just saw this one on Slashdot. I don't have any particular opinions
about its quality, but it seems interesting...

(There is a claim in the comments that it may be more dependent on
JavaScript performance than SVG/Canvas performance)

As a workaround for IE the author uses DHTML and divs with clipped
background-images in the benchmark.
I wonder what the results would be using Chrome Frame...

You've probably seen these by now, but..
The Man In Blue completed some benchmarks of Canvas vs SVG vs HTML vs
Flash

Probably the best ones yet.
