On my Chromebook, in the File Manager, I see that there is "Add new Service".
I had previously used an SMB File Share to connect to my Linux box, which worked flawlessly.
Then, it stopped working so flawlessly ;-(
I can close the connection, and add it again, and it works for a while.

Today, I noticed "Secure Shell" with the hterm icon as one of the services.
I click on it, and nothing happens.
If I select the other option to "Install New Service", I see "Secure Shell App" listed.
I hesitate to install that because it seems like it might be the ssh app that is now deprecated.

I think the link showing in "Add new Service" is actually left over from when I deleted the App.

Is Secure Shell viable under the ChromeOS File Manager?

the extension ("Secure Shell") should work fine for creating sftp mounts

the UX prob could use work as it just takes you to the connection manager, and it's up to the user to know to put in the details and click "mount" in the bottom right

I forgot about that avenue for launching sftp.
I have used that in the past, but I recall that it left an icon in the File Manager that didn't recover from a lost connection (sleep, or relocating).
I just opened the dialog, did an unmount and mount.

The way the SMB "service" worked was transparent. It worked whenever I tried it while I was at home (home-private network), without needing a relaunch.

Launching sftp from the Connection Dialog should be fine for my needs. Thanks for the reminder.

Should the "service" from the file manager work, or is that the deprecated app? If it's the app, I don't want to even launch it once.

the files app integration is the same everywhere for all fsp implementations. secure shell app and ext work the same here.

there is a long standing request about handling of creds with mounts, but it's unclear what the files app is doing, so we're not investing too much in it atm.
