On my Linux box I ran:

ssh-keygen -t rsa -C 'comment' -f chromebook.id_rsa

I copied both files to my chromebook:

chromebook.id_rsa
chromebook.id_rsa.pub

In Secure Shell I imported both of those files.

When I log in I am asked for a password.  I have passwords turned off on the server and just use keys.

No matter what I do or try I always get the message:

"Permission denied, please try again."

I'm not using Developer mode.  I'm using the Google recommended software for doing SSH named Secure Shell since they removed SSH from CROSH.

Thank you.

you need to import the keys into the shell app itself.  simply having them in your Downloads folder is not sufficient -- secure shell doesn't have access to that dir.

Hi Mike,

I think you missed the part where I said, "In Secure Shell I imported both of those files."

Thank you for your reply though.

Normally you import your private key (chromebook.id_rsa) into your ssh client and add your public key (chromebook.id_rsa.pub) to the authorized_keys file.

Hi Ricky,

OK, wow, this is something I've not read anywhere.  Is there a special way to add the pub file to the authorized_keys file?  Can I just copy/paste below the existing key or is some special format required?

Thanks!

Cool, looks like nothing special is needed and I can do a simple cat.  Will test tonight.

Thanks!
