Hello Chromium team,

My name is Aarav Mittal, and I’m a computer science student with a strong interest in open-source development. I’ve been closely following Chromium and its GSoC projects, and while I wasn't able to submit a proposal in time due to a death in my family, I’m still very eager to contribute to the Search UI Enhancements project independently - outside of GSoC -  for the experience and opportunity to give back.

I am not looking for formal mentorship, but I would truly appreciate the ability to check in occasionally for brief feedback to ensure I’m on the right track. I understand that any work I contribute would be under Google’s standard contributor agreement, and that’s completely fine - I’m genuinely here to learn and grow as a developer through hands-on contribution.

I have already begun reviewing the relevant codebase and build instructions, and I’m excited to start working. If this project (or any related component) is still open to contribution, I’d be grateful for any guidance on how best to get involved. I’d be thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute.

Best regards,
Aarav Mittal

Hi Aarav,

We didn't select any student for this project because we had a change in our team priorities that will make us focus on other projects.  It is true that the project is open source, but without coordination it is unlikely that code changes that you make would be approved and merged.  So, I would suggest that you put your efforts into a different project.

Thanks,
jason!

Hi Jason (and GSoC Team),

Thank you again for your thoughtful response. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain the team’s shift in priorities. I'm still very eager to get involved and contribute to Chromium in any way I can. If there are any projects or areas where I could help out and learn by doing, I’d be truly grateful for the opportunity. I’d be contributing completely outside of GSoC, simply for the experience and the chance to grow. If possible, I’d also really value being able to occasionally check in with someone for informal guidance, just to make sure I’m heading in the right direction.

Thank you again for your time and guidance!

Best regards,
Aarav Mittal

Hi Aarav,

I am sorry for your loss. There will be a lot of opportunities to contribute and learn.

Regarding contributions to Search UI enhancement, for next year there is no guarantee that we will have the same projects but please use this time to familiarize yourself with the codebase and skill up solving beginner bugs as all contributions weigh in for a strong proposal. For Search UI project: these are the beginner bugs you can contribute too and learn from.

Thank you,
Sreeja
