I seem to remember hearing that it was possible to have an extension on the web store which was only visible by special invitation (ie a non public link).
Is this true, and if so, how is it done?

We have an enterprise extension that has no use case for the general public. It would be convenient to be able to let our customers download it but to shield it from public display.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes,
1. Create google group.
2. Add or invite members to it.
3. Upload the extension and make it available only to that group you created

You can set the publishing scope to private and then the extension will not be searchable in the chrome store but only available to someone who has the direct link

Attention, it is still published to the store, I published in this way my paid extension to offer to some users who cannot pay and both were banned for "spam repetitive content in the store". Even if it is not visible.  Use groups.

Here's how to integrate Google Workspace with a variety of new features. Users will be able to sign in to applications securely, using familiar credentials.
