I have read a ton of blogs and research on this topic and so far what I understand is if there is no "web_accessible_resources" it is difficult for websites to detect the extension. Is it true or are there other things that I should deal with to avoid detection ? Thanks

There's no need to "prevent" anything if the extension doesn't change anything in the page or it js environment and doesn't expose itself for external messaging or web_accessible_resources. If it does change something in the page then it depends on what exactly it does and how.

This might be a little bit unrelated to your question, but keep in mind that other extensions which have requested the management permission can notice your extension by using the chrome.management API.

I should note that webAccessibleResources is undergoing some tweaks that will give devs more control over what extensions and sites can see an extension's assets. See the API proposal linked in crbug.com/1133624 for details.
