Hello,

I would like to test my extension with regard to the breaking changes to the bookmarks API described in this blog post. Unfortunately, I have not been able to enable syncing and non-syncing bookmarks in the bookmarks tree.

I have tried to create bookmarks on an account that is not signed in, sign in without turning sync on, and create bookmarks again. I only ever see the regular UI with one `Bookmarks bar` folder and one `Other bookmarks` folder.

I have tried enabling sync, disabling sync, signing in, signing out, but none of this has worked so far.

Could you please describe the exact steps I must follow to be able to enable and disable these syncing and non-syncing subtrees as many times as I would need to thoroughly test my extension?

I am on Windows, Chrome Version 143.0.7499.193 (Official Build) (64-bit).

Thank you very much for your support.

Kind regards,
Idris

Hi Idris,

Have you enabled the Chrome flags mentioned in the blog post on the chrome://flags page?
  • sync-enable-bookmarks-in-transport-mode
  • enable-bookmarks-selected-type-on-signin-for-testing

Hello Oliver,

Thank you for the prompt response. I tried to, but no such flags appeared in the page. I just verified again, and I see, for both flags, under both the `Available` and `Unavailable` tabs, the message `No matching experiments`.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Idris

Hello Idris!

Unfortunately, the flags mentioned in the blog post are outdated, you will not be able to test it by force enabling them.
In the latest Chrome version, in order to activate Account Bookmarks on Sign-in, you will need to explicitly sign-in to Chrome via the Bookmark Saving bubble. The bubble, with a sign-in button, is shown for signed out users that have just saved a bookmark; completing the sign-in this way should enable Account bookmarks.

I hope that helps!

Hi Ryan,

This worked for me, many thanks! While I'm at it, I noticed with a beta tester using my extension that the extension displayed not only the "Bookmarks bar" and the "Other bookmarks" folders under the root folder, like on my computer, but an additional "Mobile bookmarks" under the root folder as well. I had never seen that folder even though I am also using Chrome on my smartphone.

1. Would you know how to enable that specific folder?
2. Is there any documentation describing any other special folders that I may not be aware of?

Thank you for your help

Idris

Hello Idris, good to know that it worked out!

The mobile bookmark permanent folder will only be shown on Desktop if it has at least one element (this can happen if a bookmark is saved on a mobile that is signed in with the same account as Desktop). On Mobile however, it should always be shown.

Simply saving a bookmark on your mobile that is signed in with some Account A, and the signing in with the same account on Desktop (while enabling account folders), should allow you to see the Mobile Folder under the root folder.

The 4 special-permanent folders that exist under the root folder are:
- Bookmarks Bar.
- Other Bookmarks.
- Mobile Bookmarks: only shown on Desktop if not empty.
- Managed Bookmarks: only shown for users that have enterprise policies enabled, and is populated through specific policies. Bookmarks should not be editable or movable. This folder has not equivalent Account bookmarks, it is only a local-per device folder.

Thanks!
