In 2020, support was discontinued, first temporarily, then permanently, and developers were advised to switch to third-party payment APIs. Since then, I have not heard that anything has changed in this regard. But maybe I missed something, a miracle happened and Google decided to return support for paid extensions? It’s just much more difficult to do this with third-party services, because in addition to accepting payment, you also need to store information about subscriptions somewhere, most likely on your server. And then integrate everything - the extension with the payment system used and this server

Hey Anton,

I'm sorry, but there've been no miracles and payments are still not supported. There are currently no concrete plans to bring back payment support and our recommendation to use third-party payment providers still stands.

However, we are currently thinking about providing better guidance around how to monetize Chrome Extensions. Any feedback about:

* What are common use cases?
* What are the main challenges?
* What are best practices?

Would be really helpful for us.

Thanks,

Sebastian

Hey Anton, you might check out https://extensionpay.com It hosts subscription data on its server and all you need to do is add the open source library to your extension.

I looked at ExtensionPay, but I understood that it only works with Stripe, and to work with it, if I understood correctly, you need to have a company registered in the USA

It does only work with Stripe but you can sign up from anywhere Stripe supports which includes 46 countries: https://stripe.com/global

* What are common use cases?
I want to lock certain features behind "PRO license" - ideally with a yearly payment.

* What are the main challenges?
Apart from basic challenges like each user needs to create account and then verify / downgrade user when (trial) expires, there are TAXES!
Considering users are from all around the world, do I need to register for tax ID in each country?

* What are best practices?
Patreon is handling taxes, but there is a Patreon fee, transaction fee, currency conversion fee, plus the taxes, plus 30% Apple fee if user used iOS device. And the Patreon API sucks.

Considering how challenging monetizing your work is, it's no surprise people rather choose the quick buyout exit strategy.

I am in a country that is not on the list. Do I need to go to a country that is on the list? Do I need to become a resident of that country or register a company there?

Unfortunately, the main problem of the extension market is not the lack of payment acceptance tools - Stripe and Firebase solve this problem in 1 hour without any problems.

The biggest problem is the lack of payment culture among users or, God forbid, subscriptions to extensions among users. I say this based on all the experience and pain from building an extension with 5k USD MRR 😂.
