programmatic open Extension popup window

Hi,

My extension use a background.html to handle logic, popup.html to
display them, but I want to send alert somehow to notify the user
without having them have to click on popup window to see it.

Without using tabs permission and window.alert(), can I
problematically display the popup window?

Assuming you're talking about the browserAction, no, you can't. http://code.google.com/chrome/extensions/faq.html#faq-open-popups

Thanks, I changed to desktop notification, it somewhat does what I want.
