When do chrome extensions update themselves?
The documents say they are updated automatically, but even after restarting the entire browser does not initiate the update.
I have to either turn on developer mode and click "update extensions now" or reinstall the extension completely.

maybe the version number is not increased, or the extension ID is different.  or it is not a chrome web store extension... for me it seems like locally hosted extensions no longer update themselves.
has it ever updated itself before, and now it stopped working?
for me if I select "update extensions now" it is enough to force a pull after it is published in the chrome web store.

The extension is hosted on chrome webstore and it has updated itself successfully, and "update extesnions now" also forces the update for me too but general users aren't familiar with the concept of having to enable developer mode to do that. While I assume the extension should update when the browser restarts or extension page is refreshed, it is usually not the case. Sometimes you have to either restart your computer or reinstall it in order to get the latest version. I would like to know exactly how the update works.

Generally, you can assume that it will take a day for updates to get out to everyone. (I know some pings are throttled at one-a-day, although the extension auto update seems to be closer to 6 or 12 hours)

However, you can also combine requestUpdateCheck and onUpdateAvailable to force the behavior that you want -- although it can still be throttled if you call it too much.
