Opening sidepanel automatically

Is there a way to automatically open the side panel from the service_worker without clicking the extension icon?

Thank you. However, is it possible to open the side panel without any user interaction? 

My scenario is this: every time a user visits a page, if the extension recognizes the URL (by matching it against a list), the side panel needs to open automatically without any user interaction. Do you think this can be achieved?

That depends on the definition of what a "user action" is, which I had thought was an explicit user interaction, not just going to a specific page. But you can easily test it and see.
