Like most of the extension developers who have been developing extensions for a long time, I get annoyed when the rating system is abused. Here are some facts
  • Real users only leave reviews as bug reports -- when something isn't working. These are always 1-stars
  • Soliciting and incentivizing real feedback and reviews is forbidden -- and we all know that the users of free software are beyond lazy
  • There's now a cottage industry of 3rd world countries and ai shops outright polluting reviews with their slop for a low-low price! I wanted to sample these "questionable delights", results:
    • One test extension released had a whopping 5 users, but now  sports  200 positive reviews!
    • Observing the rate of "cleanup" -- about 5 accounts of these spammers have been deleted in the last month
  • But wait, there is more! What If I use this offensively? Purchasing a drip review service against some of my competitors, and boom, the 5 user extension is now the best rated category extension in CWS

Honestly, CWS review system is just broken, abused, and triggering. It would benefit the ecosystem, Google, and Chrome to simply comment the entire thing out until such time that there is control over spam.

A second that! I'd like to add that spammers trying to force you to buy positive reviews by leaving many 1* no-feedback for your extension, bring down your rating.

How can I protect myself from these spammers?

Write to tech support, they should unscrew and remove them if it really was spam, and provide a screenshot of the extortion letter.
