Hi,

We just had a user on Chrome 129 saying that our MV2 version is no longer available for install on CWS. Will all MV2 extensions be disabled by default on Chrome 129?

Best,
Andreas

My understanding is that MV2 deprecation is moreso tied to the "user" than directly to the "browser version", per:
Obviously since enterprise MV2 extensions are promised to remain enabled through at least 2025, the browser itself will retain code that allows it the technical capacity to run MV2 extensions throughout the entirety of 2024.

Hi Andreas,

We haven't changed anything about the extensions available in the Chrome Web Store. Manifest V2 extensions will remain available until they are no longer supported in the browser.

We have started disabling extensions on some pre-beta channels, but it is possible to re-enable them.

In Chrome 129 there is now chrome://flags/#extension-manifest-v2-deprecation-disabled which blocks MV2 extension from being installed from CWS, and disables MV2 extension that are already installed.
Is it planned that this flag is enabled when Chrome 129 moves to stable channel?

Hi Andreas,

We exposed that flag to make it easier to see what that stage of the experiments will look like.

However, it isn't an indication that anything is linked to Chrome 129 in particular - we'll continue to roll out the experiments over time based on the data we see. That may be around the same time as Chrome 129, earlier or later.

Thanks,
