When installing any extension that overrides the New Tab page, Chrome opens two tabs — about:blank (focused) and the extension’s New Tab page — each time a new browser window is created.
This issue occurs only on macOS and only for chrome profiles created after recent chrome updates.
Steps to Reproduce:
Create a new Chrome profile → Continue without account
Install any extension that overrides the New Tab page (e.g. Homey, Momentum, or any other New Tab extension)
Close Chrome -> Open Chrome (newly created account)
Environment:
OS: macOS
Expected result:
Only one tab — the extension’s New Tab page.
Actual result:
Two tabs open — about:blank (focused) and the extension’s page.
I’ve recorded a short video that clearly shows the issue in action:
https://youtu.be/FOo6TzjOT0k
It reproduces with any New Tab extension installed.
Would appreciate if someone from the team could confirm whether this is already tracked internally or if I should file it as a bug on the Chromium issue tracker.
Thanks again,
Oleksandr
