I want to change my free extension to something that requires a monthly fee to use. I'm looking for ideas on how to do this. Does the chrome play store support this model? Do I need to do it another way?

TIA.

Chrome Web Store and Google Play are different services. CWS does not have payment or subscription services, so you'll need to find another way to implement this.  Without recommending or vouching for any services, some options I'm aware of in this space are Stripe, BrainTree, Gumroad, and ExtensionPay.

Generally speaking, the best path for website and extension monetization is to provide a web service (or a free product with a premium web service) that can only be accessed by paying customers. By splitting the implementation of a feature across the extension and a coordinating server, you can make it much harder for people to pirate your product.
