Chrome Extension Transparent Background

Hi, 

I am making an extension and I wanted it to have a transparent background. It should not appear as a popup like most extensions do. I'm looking to make something which looks like the Pocket Extension (https://help.getpocket.com/article/883-using-pocket-for-google-chrome). Any ideas how this can be done? 

Any help is appreciated. :)

It must be some content script adding a div on every tab.
