Chrome Web Apps can't open Chrome Side Panel extensions

Hi,

We are having a problem when people install Gmail or other website onto their system through the Chrome Browser as a Web App (aka shortcut). 

When using these Chrome Web Apps, users cannot open our extension's Chrome Side Panel. 

Is there a way to allow users with Chrome Web Apps to open the side bar?

Not all types of browser windows support side panels, currently only "normal" windows are supported.

window.open(url, target, "popup") is a "popup" type window.

PWA install or Chrome Create Shortcut is an "app" type window.

Here is the definition of window.type.

Any plans to lift the restriction to allow side panels to be used on "app" window.type?  

The lack of side panel support for this window type is really fragmenting our user experience, it would be ideal if this capability was passed to the developer/end-user.
