We were just doing some testing ahead a new release and ran into this
behavior where if you try to download and install in extension without
being signed into the Chrome Web Store, you get the error "Download is
not a valid CRX"

Is this new behavior that I'd somehow missed? A bug in the Webstore?
A bug in Chrome? Is there a discussion thread on the list I missed
about this?

Ideas are good things to have even if they are old.

Anyone know anything about this?

I don't see the problem at trunk. What extension do you see the problem with?

Yesterday it was with all extension we tested in the web store on chrome 24. If we were not signed into the store we saw the error.

Ok I was being dumb and was still signed into the store. Just tested with a blank profile and indeed it looks like the webstore is sending bad data when not logged in. I've filed it as an issue against the internal store, we hope to get this fixed asap.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention!
Ben.

Could you do us a favour: try clearing the cache (not cookies) and see if that fixes the problem?

I'd ask you to as a separate step (not sure whether it's the cache or cookies) try clearing cookies too - but that can be pretty invasive - so if you're willing, perhaps just clear webstore cookies and see if that helps?

Cheers,
Ben.

I've only got Canary installed currently, but it didn't reproduce for
me on today's build. I'll check with another user.

The user reports that after clearing the cache he's redirected to log
in when he tries to download an extension. That's clearly a better
behavior than the other, but the added friction to getting extensions
(and I presume apps) isn't something I'd call ideal from a developer
or user standpoint.

I was caught pretty flat-footed by this change. What should I be
doing to keep myself better informed, given the What's New page
(http://developer.chrome.com/extensions/whats_new.html) is a couple
versions behind?

I was also caught flat-footed, I wasn't aware of any such change, in fact I don't see the login button - it should show for apps, but not extensions.

Also many users report for me this error. And i was saw it myself actually several times.
It is not related to the fact that somebody is logged or not in the own Google account.
I saw it when i was logged.

Trying to press install button several times often help

The silence from Google on this issue is deafening. Who do we need to poke to get someone to fix the Chrome Web Store? Paging Aaron Boodman...

I'm visiting the store team tomorrow, I'll see if I can get an update.

Hey Joe, any update from the web store team?

I just got the most poorly timed email from a web store representative asking me to try out some new badge to help them promote the web store. They sure know how to piss off developers. Is anyone awake over there?

:-)

They are actually busy looking at the problem right now. Someone might reach out to you on this.

It looks like the team has identified the issue, and the fix will be rolling out in a bit. I'll see if there are more details.

Really Google? This is all you're going to give us? Please, tell us what the bug was and what steps you are going to take to make sure that it doesn't take 3 months to solve similar issues in the future.

Some posts from lifehacker, from browser-extension category:

Vagari  7 days ago
All I'm getting is a "Download was not a CRX" error when I try to install it.

1 reply @Vagari
Apparently it's an issue that affects all plugin installs. Opening the tab in Incognito Mode solved it for me.

But it was posted 7 days ago.
So maybe before your fix.
But take note if not.

We had a bug that provide wrong download url at install time and that was fixed now, and unfortunately we didn't setup monitoring for this specific case so it skipped out of our sight for quite a while, this is very bad indeed. We are working on improving the monitoring now so that we will get just in time alerts for similar issues in the future to make sure it won't happen again.

Thank you for the reporting and continuous support, we appreciate your input.

The version of Chrome is the issue I have experienced.  I had to downgrade to Chrome version 27.0.1453.110 to get extensions working again @ http://www.oldapps.com

I'm having the same issue. I've tried installing in an incognito window - no luck. Signing out and signing back in again - no luck. Uninstalling and reinstalling - no luck. Happens with any extension I try to load. I'm running 29.0.1547.66 m. Tried downgrading but the installer I got for 27.0.1453.110 from oldapps.com just quits at the start.

Google - this has been a known issue for nearly nine months - what are you doing about it?

I've had this problem both signed in and not. It would download the file but error when installing, saying that it is not a CRX file. I am on a networked thinclient, so saving locally was not an option.

I solved it for this specific behavior. After the CRX finishes downloading, I opened the download location and dragged it into the extensions tab. Chrome was able to make sense of that and install it properly. Its worked for ABP, IE Tab, and Tampermonkey, among others.
