The developer dashboard has an input for google analytics UA code. I have of course entered our UA into that input but there is no tracking showing up in google analytics, this is making it very difficult to track ad conversion.
We send the adverts directly to the page on the chrome store. But they are not picked up in analytics.
Is there something that can be done to fix this? are we meant to be losing tracking of customers between ad/our site and the extension?

Any help would be greatfully appreciated. We are waiting to increase our marketing spend but cant justify it without being able to report on it

thanks,
Kev

Hey

just like to say i'm also experiencing this issue. I've tried several times with several different UA codes and analytics setups, including changing the urls even trying several different property types e.g. website and app and nothing has worked.

Kind regards,
Ash

Hi Chrome team

This issue still doesn’t seem to be solved and I would appreciate your help.

We too have added our Google Analytics ID into the Chrome Webstore but apart from the very basic install data we are unable to report on any Google advertising campaigns that we direct to our extension on the Chrome Web Store.

We would like to report on the campaign sources etc in Google Analytics for our Chrome extension.

Do you know if this can be done?

Best regards

Rodney

Hey all,

First, I want to confirm that CWS does not currently support tracking UTM parameters. This is a known limitation of the current implementation. I know we have a feature request on the backlog, but I have no sense of when the CWS team might tackle this.

Second, it might help to get some more context on what parameters would be useful for measuring conversions. My impression is that source, medium, and campaign cover the +90% use case. Are there any other parameters that you would like to track? If so, why?

Cheers,

Hi Simeon

Thanks for your quick response as always.

Source, medium, and campaign will certainly cover most of the bases. Knowing the referrer can sometimes be helpful if the install was not from an advert but it isn’t absolutely required.

In the interim is there any way to get around this issue, as it’s a pretty big deal?  Is there no extra info that can be passed to us when a user installs the Extension?

Alternatively, I know that the Google Ads team doesn’t allow a URL redirect (Ie. directing a user from an ad to our website to track the source, medium and campaign and then automatically redirecting them to the Webstore) but do you think you could ask if them to permit redirects to the Chrome Chrome Store as that is a safe end point (and matches the URL of the company)?

Best regards,

Rodney

My responses aren't always quick, but I appreciate the sentiment :)

It's a little awkward, but one way to track installation sources is to combine the <all_urls> permission with onInstalled callback to query for a webstore tab with your extension ID. Once you have that, you can parse the tab's URL to extra the UTM parameters and record the conversion from within the extension. Of course, this approach does not measure other parts of the funnel, but some data may be better than none.

do you think you could ask [the Google Ads team] to permit redirects to the Chrome Chrome Store as that is a safe end point (and matches the URL of the company)?

My gut reaction to this idea is "here be dragons." That said, the only way to know for sure is to ask.
