My extension doesn't involve any icon clicks and won't be showing anything in a popup as well. So, i chose not to include browser_action in my manifest. But a default icon still shows in the address bar. How can i get rid of it ?

As a developer, you cannot. This is a security measure to make sure the user knows they have all of those extensions installed.
The user can put them aside (either by dragging them into the Chrome menu, or by right clicking on them and selecting "Hide in Chrome menu") and they will only show up within the Chrome menu (the three-dots button).
