Using the favicon URL does not always work

I've recently upgraded to MV3.

I notice that even if I

• visit a page
• build the favicon URL as advised in the docs
• open the URL in a new tab

I see the generic icon.

But if I refresh the original page, then the icon tab, it shows.

Is this a bug or am I missing something?

That sounds like a bug to me. I just had a quick try, but I wasn't immediately able to reproduce this.

Hi Oliver,

I'm pretty sure this is happening, but I've noticed it also happens with any changes in the URL, such as a missing slash, removal of www. or query string.

For this API to be actually useful, could it not have some kind of sensible fallback to the same domain, even behind a switch?

i.e. I've been to davestewart.co.uk/blog but then I bookmark davestewart.co.uk/work, and rather than a missing icon, it grabs one from its internal DB based on a best guess (or some other mechanism) ?

I completely agree! We have an open issue for that actually: https://issues.chromium.org/363806058

Unfortunately it's been open for quite a while and hasn't seen any movement. I'll see if I can bump it.

Any solutions here, I am having the exact same problem. Even after following the steps correctly and using the example code favicons for most of the sites are not shown. 

Changing url by adding/removing www or changing the protocol sometimes load favicons for some websites.
