According to the docs "Locate the external_extensions.json file under the Chrome installation directory and add the following key inside the curly brackets "

For windows I added the extension details in C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\
Google\Chrome\Application\4.0.249.78\Extensions folder and is working fine.

As you replied I created external_extensions.json in ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default/Extensions, but chrome is not detecting it after a restart.

I tried similarly for Windows also by copying to C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions, here also Chrome is "not" detecting the extension!

The external_extensions.json should work in mac, just create the file
in ~/Library/Application Support/Chromium/Default/extensions . I
however didn't try it myself, but as far as I know there is no reason
for it to not work. (And the directory for linux should be ~/.config/
chromium/Default/Extensions)

The thing might be that you're using Google Chrome, whereas it might
only work in chromium for now (this is however only a random guess).
Otherwise I can't test anything this weekend as I will be away, but I
will check it out next monday.
