We've been working on overhauling our extension to support MV3. It's past the June 2024 deadline and our extension is still available on the web store. I'm wondering if we'll be notified as developers when/how-soon our extension will be made unavailable? i.e. "your extension will no longer be on the web store in 1 week". (I understand this can vary depending on the version of chrome). My second question is, if we do not have a MV3 version by the time the extension is removed, but complete it afterwards will our users be able to re-enable/update it directly? Would it be automatic? Or will they have to re-install it?

Thank you for the help.

Hi Rolando,

What began in June of 2024 was the experiments to disable MV2 extensions. It isn't a black and white as you may be expecting. We are currently in a soft deprecation phase. That means that ~50% of users in Chrome Canary and Chrome Dev channel are having their MV2 extensions disabled right now. The "soft" part is because they are allowed to turn them back on, if disabled. All MV2 extensions should continue to be available on the Chrome Web Store until they are no longer supported in Chrome at all. This would be while the ExtensionManifestV2Availability enterprise policy is available, which we have guaranteed would be until at least June of 2025. However, MV2 extensions will likely be reduced in search results and potentially hidden from all traffic other than direct links to it's listings. There is no date or Chrome version where this is set to happen, though we will communicate that here and on our documentation page once it does happen.

Hey Patrick,

Thanks for the context! Is there a date set for when the soft deprecation rolls out into chrome stable? I see the canary version with the soft rollout will reach chrome stable on Tue, Oct 15, 2024, but not sure if that implies the soft rollout will be active or if the current plan is just beta/canary for now.

Thanks!
