I have thousands of users who have installed my extension from a locally-hosted crx file on my web server.
Now that installing locally won't work for most users, I need to find a way to smoothly transition them to the version hosted in the web store.

Can I change the auto-update xml file that they check against to point to the crx hosted in the web store?

If they just install the new version from the web store, they will get two copies of the extension, since it won't realize that they are the same, right?

So what is the right strategy to convert users over to the web store versions?

Thanks,

Matt Kruse

Existing users can continue to update from your locally hosted CRX. We just require that new users install from the store.

In your own hosted CRX, put "http://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx" as the value of the "update_url" key and you should be good to go.

But before PhistucK's suggestion, you should look into http://developer.chrome.com/extensions/packaging.html#upload. This will keep it as the _same_ package id so that there can't be duplicates.
