I am using the Extension Update Testing Tool (https://developer.chrome.com/docs/extensions/develop/concepts/permission-warnings#view-tool/).
When I follow the instructions under "Install manually" to download and install the extension, I drag and drop the file on to the chrome://extensions page, I get this error "Package is invalid: 'CRX_REQUIRED_PROOF_MISSING".
What am I doing wrong?

Note: In the manifest.json file (in the extension.crx file), I see a new line ""update_url":"http://localhost:8080/updates.xml"". If I have to create this updates.xml file myself, what should it contain?

Hi Bob,

Using the "Install manually" steps is only supported in Chromium, not branded builds of Google Chrome.

Are you trying Chromium, or could you try one of the policy options instead?

Thanks, Oliver. Yes, I use Chromium, not Chrome. Node.js, NPM and all that.
And I think I found the reason.
In order not to get confused in the versions, I downloaded main.crx from the Package section, unpacked it and used it for experiments with EUTTool. I did not notice that in this case a line with update.crx was added to the manifest.
I removed it and EUTTool started working fine.

Ah, thanks for following up!

Glad you have it working now.
