Weekly users jumped from 200 to 1,500 in 4 days — no matching install/pageview spike

Hi, I have a small Chrome extension (tab suspender, ~200 organic installs over 2.5 months). In the last 4 days my weekly users went from 200 → 520 → 999 → 1,511. Meanwhile my installs chart still shows 5-8 per day, page views are normal, impressions are normal. Nothing changed in any other metric — just weekly users.

I haven't done any advertising, no new traffic sources appeared in Google Analytics, and ChromeOS went from ~10% to 27% of my user base around the same time.

Is this a known dashboard issue? Batch recomputation lag? Org force-installs that don't show in the installs chart? Something else entirely?

  Any insight would be appreciated, I can't find documentation on how weekly users are actually counted.

these are fake users, for several years now, developers have been receiving emails from people offering such fake users

The last few days 2 of my extensions have been experiencing the same. Users keep increasing by 500 per day, but without corresponding installs or page views. This looks like some bot to me. It's happened to me before, and the user count will eventually drop down to normal.

The same happened to my 2 extenions, 2-3 times last half a year, very annoying behaviour, hope CWS team can help and make it more predictable ...
