I would also like to have a simpler way of monetizing extensions without forcing users to open their wallets.
If you want to offer your extension for free, you have to come up with some convoluted way of generating revenue and the Web Store Guidelines are full of restrictions that only makes it harder.
If we were able to use the AdSense service as part of our monetization strategy it would give us additional incentive to turn good ideas into a product which wouldn't otherwise work if users had to pay.
Imaging a world in which you couldn't use the web as an advertisement platform and so Google services (the search engine, Gmail, Youtube, etc.) would have to be paid services.
1. Paid service implies
2. Low number of users which implies
3. Revenue is the payment itself
On the other hand:
1. Free service implies
2. Large number of users which implies
3. Advertisement opportunities which implies
4. Revenue
I can only see a benefit to the Chrome extension ecosystem if developers could concentrate more on development and less on how to generate revenue.
