Issues with playing Netflix on Chromium

Hi there,

I was able to watch Netflix video's without any issues using the latest Chromium build (112.0.5615.101 (Official Build) (64-bit)) with the Widevine CDM plugin enabled.

However, today, all of a sudden, it stopped working and I'm getting this error message from Netflix: M7121-1331.

I have verified that DRM is still working by going to this site: https://bitmovin.com/demos/drm.

Also, I'm able to watch Netflix using the official Google Chrome browser on the same machine.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going wrong here?

I asked them but they suggested just using Chrome or downloading the app from the Microsoft Store.

The reason I'm asking here is 1. it does work on Chrome (and Canary), just not on Chromium, and 2. I've read some articles that Google made some changes to the CDM stuff.

In Chrome I actually see two CDM components. One is called "Widevine Content Decryption Module - Version: 4.10.2557.0" and the other is "Google Widevine Windows CDM - Version: 1.0.2512.0".

In my Chromium build, I have the former but not the latter.

What version of the CDM do you have? You can get it from chrome://media-internals#cdms

Ah, I see. I missed the part where DRM works in Chrome but doesn't on Chromium. The reason for this is that some sites (e.g. Netflix) require the browser to be signed by someone they trust. So self signed browsers will likely not work for these sites for protected playback.

We use Omaha for build a metainstaller. In this process, omaha will create an installer a long side with meta installer. Then, it tags metadata to installer and using SignTool.exe provided default in msvc to sign installer and a lot of *.dll file. We config some environment variables for signtool using our Digicert EV (on USB, cannot export privatekey) for sign binaries instead of using private key that located on computer.  Sign process is completely and we can see the installer and other binaries are signed by the cert.  We do not know what exactly this process does but generally, it does what I described above.
