I'm curious as to how many people out there actually open links
without using the right click - 'open link in new tab'. I wish there
was an option to choose every link you click on to open in a new tab,
and have the right click option be 'open link in same tab'. I
personally dislike having to use the back button. It's slower to
close a tab, than go back and wait for things to load.

***quicker to close a tab, than press back***

Middle clicking (i.e. click the scroll wheel) on a link opens it
always in a new tab, it does not focus the new tab though). I am using
this more than "open link in new tab".

I personally like the current system.  I do also sometimes middle click or drag the link to the tab bar, but I still find the menu item useful.

That said, I would not mind an “Open link in current tab" option for sites where every link opens in a new tab.

What can I say, there is an extension for that (or so I recall). Google it (I have not used it).

It's the Chrome Toolbox (by Google) extension you are looking for.

You can choose to open in front or background tab.

I personally Ctrl+Click when I need to open a link in a new tab.

If I wanted to open in the same tab, I would just copy the URL and
paste in the address bar.

...and I hardly ever right-click to open in a new tab. I always middle-
click with my mouse. You can also middle-click the tab to close. I do
that and Ctrl+F4 interchangeably.
