Sorry if this is not the right forum to post. I'd like to know if there is a way to configure chromium on ubuntu to use an external viewer (e.g., evince) to open pdf documents? I would prefer not to install any plugins / view the document inside the browser. I've tried changing mailcap / xdg-mime to no avail. Thanks.

In Chrome for Windows you can turn off embedded pdf viewer and Chrome will prompt to save file. When download completes I click on file in download bar and it opens in my preferred pdf viewer.
Maybe the same can be done in Chromium on Ubuntu.

Type about:plugins in the address bar and hit Enter
Once on the Plug-ins page, scroll down until you see Chrome PDF Viewer and select Disable
That’s it! You’re all done. The only problem now, though, is that Chrome will warn you every time that you try to load a PDF that the file can harm your computer:

I have the same behavior right now and I am wondering if there is a way to not needing to first save the file and click from the download bar. I have already removed the chrome pdf viewer.

The problem with needing to save the file first will only be fixed when this bug is fixed.  Be sure the add a STAR to it:

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=333  -  Instead of just being able to save what you download- be able to run.
