Summary
Please add support for the MKV (Matroska) container in Chromium, specifically targeting 4K HDR10 content encoded in HEVC Main 10. MKV has become extremely widespread across personal libraries, education, archival, and self-hosted platforms. Lack of native support forces heavy server-side transcoding or complex client workflows, which is costly and energy-inefficient.

Motivation / Impact

  • MKV is a de-facto standard container in many ecosystems. Large portions of HDR10 HEVC content are distributed as MKV.

  • Server-side transcoding (especially HEVC→AV1/VP9) is resource-intensive and significantly increases latency and operational cost.

  • Native playback enables simpler setups for local files, intranet portals, and self-hosted services without re-packaging.
