I am finding Chromium's autofill very irritating and have been trying to turn it off.  I don't seem to be able to.

Most instructions tell me that after going to "Settings," then "Advanced" that I should select "Passwords and Forms."  I see no such option.

Instead, the option for 'Passwords" is at the top under "People."  It's not even in the advanced options.

Under "Advanced" I I turned the following off:

"Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar" and "Use a prediction service to load pages more quickly"

But no change, even after restarting the browser.

When I start typing into the search bar, my history appears.  On websites if I enter a search, previous searches drop down from the menu.

I'm frustrated by the fact that my settings menu doesn't even match with what websites are telling me I should see.

How can I turn off autofill?

Hi Andrew,

Sorry to hear about your frustrations.

It's not quite clear from your email exactly which feature(s) you want to disable:
  • Chrome helping you fill in address, credit card, and password forms within pages (autofill)?

Under "People" in the "Settings Menu" there are sections to enable and manage passwords, payment information and addresses. Disabling the latter will also stop Chrome from offering suggestions of other things you've previously filled into various forms. The UI for these settings have changed recently.

  • Chrome offering you suggestions when you type into the Chrome search/address bar, aka the omnibox (autocomplete)?

The setting your mention in your original post disables the use of a prediction service to complete searches/URL typed into the address bar; but, to my knowledge, there isn't a setting to entirely disable omnibox autocomplete. Chrome will still offer to autocomplete based on your local browser and search history.
I hope this helps,

Roger

If you click on your profile picture next to the three vertical dots button, it has a "Passwords" option. Does clicking on it show you the user names and passwords?

No, It only shows the passwords and not usernames, and that is the actual issue. Please see the image for instance:

You did not save any password. Your "Saved Passwords" list is empty.
When you save a password, a user name will show up next to it. See below.

I am talking about different context wherein we don't save passwords but chrome automatically saves usernames of different websites.
Chrome then auto-suggest these usernames while accessing these websites. I am asking:- where does chrome stores these usernames??
For instance:

This is autofill. I do not think autofill entries are user-browsable. They are stored in the user data directory, probably in SQLite databases, or LevelDB or some other data structure.
(But they are synchronizable if you use Chrome Sync)

You should expect delays, do not ping after a few hours, give people a few days to reply (I did not even see your ping, I started typing a reply earlier and had other things to do).

Hi,

So there are (confusingly) three features that make suggestions:

password manager - this understands that you have usernames and passwords associated to a given site
credit card & address autofill - this understands names, mailing and email addresses, and payment info
autocomplete - this just remembers text you've previously entered into a given field, without any understanding of the text

When Chrome both recognizes the form and has data of the appropriate type to offer, you get suggestions from either password manager or autofill, depending on the the type of form. Otherwise, Chrome falls back to suggesting something it has seen you enter into the form before (i.e., autocomplete).

Unfortunately, there's no real UI for the autocomplete data; but, if you have sync enabled, you *can* see your autocomplete data in chrome://sync-internals in the "Sync Node Browser" tab under the "Autofill" folder. The data is just a collection of {field name, value} pairs. You can cause this data to be deleted using "Clear browsing data" -> Advanced -> "Autofill Form Data". The UI will inform you of how many credit card, addresses and "others" will be deleted. The "others" are the autocomplete entries.

chrome://settings/autofill is where you can find the UI for editing your saved addresses.

From the screenshot, it looks like there's several websites on the list of "Never Saved". Any website on this list will NOT save your username/password. I see from the screenshot that facebook is on this list of sites to not save passwords for. If you remove it from the list, you'll be prompted to save a password later.
