If you're reading numbers from Windows Task Manager, then be careful
because the numbers there aren't correct. If you care about these
things, get a better task or process monitor. SysInternals -- now part
of microsoft, but still not included in windows :( -- have free
downloads for all kinds and uses. They even have tools to show what's
happening in your computer if you are researching a specific slowness.

Apart from researching and being curious, do you have a situation
where Chrome takes so much memory that it prevents som other program
from working well?
How much memory does you computer have?

If you are satisfied with only knowing how much memory Chrome uses
(the real numbers!) you can also open a tab and type in the address
about:memory and look in the upper table for Total for Chrome. With
gmail, two tabs and one about:memory open my Chrome uses some 300 MB,
but I have very few plugins.
I know that Chrome uses a lot of memory to help speed up surfing.
Chrome is "keeping notes" of how to open your favorite websites
faster, which uses memory and speeds things up. There is also the
browsing history database, autocomplete (for omni addressbar),
autofill (web forms) and a bunch of other things. There's even a
database used to give warnings if you are about to click into a known
virus/malware website. All these are by default kept on your harddisk
for privacy, and cached in memory for speed.

If you discover your plugins use a lot of memory, there could be an
idea find which plugin is the worst and then write an email with a
screendump and ask the plugin author if they can use less memory.

There are some ideas towards making it possible to save memory for
plugins, like lazy-loading rarely used plugins. If you find some
specific places or situations where you think too much memory is being
used, please write again and give more details! :-)

I've asked that question once (1GB of RAM, and Chromium swallows so
much!), and I've been told, that there's a command line switch
--single-process
but they also told me, that it's not recommended to use it, so you
really shouldn't, but if your performance decreases and Chromium works
slow, you can increase the priority in the Task Manager (if you use
Windows, I don't know about Mac or Linux)

--single-process is for testing only and is known to break Chrome. Do not use.

There is also this :

--memory-model=high
--memory-model=medium
--memory-model=low

But, how can I use this ???

It looks like --memory-model is not useful to "use less memory", see
http://www.mail-archive.com/chromi...@googlegroups.com/msg05368.html

If you are sure that what you need is to use less memory, then it is a
really good idea to use less plugins.
Or go to chrome://settings/advanced and remove some security -- you
can uncheck protection to save memory. Most other checkboxes there on
the top can also save some memory by removing functionality. If
removing functionality to get more unused memory is what you like, you
can also try replacing Chrome with Chromium. Since Chromium is missing
some features, it could possibly use less memory. But you would loose
security.

(If you want security and speed, then you may have to allow the
computer to make use of its memory instead of leaving memory unused.
I'm doing my best do make use of my memory, but only for good things
so I make sure to forget sports results and bad memories... You
computer should, too.)
