The test code is not isolated from the rest of the code, it's distributed throughout the source next to the files it tests. 2.8GB is not really that large; when you actually build it, it will get substantially larger than that; if you don't have enough disk space for this, then your computer probably is insufficient to build Chromium anyway...

of Chromium without testing code ? I haven't found it yet.

There is no other version of the source code other than what you have. If it's too big, you need to buy a bigger hard disk; if you have trouble accommodating a 'mere' 3GB of source then you won't have room to build it anyway. :)
