Hi Team,

I would like to know if it is permitted to use clients3.google.com/generate_204 in my local application to check if the user is connected to the internet or not.

I found this URL in this blog post https://chromium.org/chromium-os/chromiumos-design-docs/network-portal-detection

If it is permitted, I am planning to hit this URL every 3.5 seconds with a head request.

Please tell me about SLA for this, If any available.

Thanks,
Syed Umair

I am not sure the Chrome team is in charge of that domain/URL (I think it is used in google.com regardless of Chrome).

Relatedly, how will you know whether it succeeds? It does not seem to support CORS. Or does "Local App" mean a Chrome application (CRX)?

HI PhistucK,

Thanks for responding,

I am planning to hit this API in an electron app.

I will be making HEAD request using the http module in the NodeJS(available in the browser window created using electron). I will say that network is reachable if I receive the 204 response code.

No insights - I am not working for Google, so I have no idea.
If I were you, I would not use it.
You can create a free Google App Engine (or Heroku or similar) application that simply returns 204 (hopefully, it is not blocked by the users of your local application).
