I'm using canary as my surf the web and development tool. But I meet a problem, the target link in other app eg: word would be opened in my default browser chrome not canary, and canary settings says "This is a secondary installation of Google Chrome, and cannot be made your default browser."

What can I do? I must accept the facts and open two browsers at the same time?

I think there is a way to manually set it as a default browser.
Not having a built in way to do that is an intended decision.

Search for "manually setting a default browser" or something like that. Beware that it may involve some Windows registry editing, which is a bit dangerous if you are not careful.

Hello
Making Canary your default browser is prohibited by the Chrome team.
You can "legally" make Chromium your default browser instead : update it manually downloading and executing as administrator mini_installer.exe
Slightly fresher than Canary

Hello
I'm sorry to reply your post now. I try your suggestion update canary from https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/canary.html
but when I download ChromeSetup.exe,I don't know how execute it by  mini_installer.exe. Please tell me how to execute as administrator mini_installer.exe?

Best Regards

Hello

So sorry, maybe I didn't explain it clearly

I proposed to you using Chromium instead of Canary because making Chromium your default browser is possible and legal.

go to here

and click on the last line, then download mini_installer.exe, then execute it as administrator

The operation must be repeated every day (updating is manual)

Chromium is another browser than "Google Chrome" and Canary (blue logo). It contains only "free" softwares.

Hello

I'm sorry, the link you give me can't be accessed. Maybe I'm from China, so some webpage is prevented. Can you tell me other download links?
I find some download links but they either can't be valid or decompressed about chrome.dll. So I didn't make a progress about the chromium installation.

Hello

So sorry. Try this non-official link from a French review.

Hello

Sorry, I give up. I download the link you show me, but exe file prompts me '.exe is not a valid Win32 application', so I can't get chromium. I decide to not waste time on this question. If only I open link in other software carefully, i.e. copy address and paste in canary address bar, return.

Thank you so much.

Best Regards

Instead of editing the registry, use the preferred method for Windows OS: Set Default Programs in Control Panel

1. Open Control Panel
2. Search for 'default programs'
3. Click on 'Set your default programs'
4. Click on Google Chrome Canary
5. Click on 'Set this program as default'

You should see the 'This program has 0 out of 20 defaults' line change to something like 'This program has 19 out of 20 defaults'.

That's it. You're welcome.

I just installed it like normal then just moved the C:\Users\usernamehere\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome SxS folder to C:\Program Files\Google\ and created a shortcut to the desktop for
C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\Chrome.exe and launched lit like normal then it gave me the option to set a default

This seems to be working (after renaming the folder) BUT it launches the old version, not Canary...
I tried this mainly because I want to be using the 64-bit version of chrome...

Go to "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Default Programs\Set Program Associations" in Windows and set it as defaults for everything it can open. It worked with Chrome Canary.

Yes, that probably works. However, Chrome Canary cannot be set as the default browser from Chrome settings because the Chrome team does not want a less stable browser to be set as the default. Chrome Canary has the very latest changes and may change or break at any time; Chrome Dev, Chrome Beta, or Chrome Stable would be more stable.

Sorry Harshad,

Google Chrome Canary DOESN'T set itself as default for any protocols in Windows !
So instead of saying non-sensical things, please test before you give an answer !

Thank You.
