Hi,

I'd like to install Chrome OS on my l laptop, but it's not a
straightforward install, so I am hoping to get a little advice on how
to proceed.

I have a Lenovo T60 that recently crashed. I'm not very knowledgeable
about operating systems and the nuances of their installation, but I
can read tech forums and follow instructions. I had been trying to
move over to Ubuntu from Windows 98 before the crash. The hard drive
has been partitioned in preparation for a dual boot setup, but the
windows installer for Ubuntu wouldn't work on my machine for some
reason, I think it might have been the internet connection, so Ubuntu
is about half installed. It's a mess. I could still run windows at
that point, though, so fixing it was on the back burner. Then it
crashed. I think something got "disconnected," apparently my toddler
banged on the keys and it died. "Unmountable Boot Volume" it says. I
think that if I wipe and reformat the hard drive, and re-install the
hard drive, everything will work just fine. Right now I'm running off
of a live CD for Linux Mint. No chinks with that band-aid, except I'd
like to be able to use netflix and play dvds in addition to running an
operating system. I'm thinking that what sounds nice, now that I am
aware that Chrome OS is compatable with netflix, is to install Chrome
OS on the laptop. As I am without a disk burner, it would be nice to
be able to do this from a USB drive. However, from inspecting more
closely, the instructions for installing from a USB drive mean
perpetually booting from the USB. I would much rather use the USB like
an install CD and install from the USB permanently onto the computer.
Can I do that? Does Chrome come with a disk partitioning utility like
most other OSs, or do I need to wipe and format ahead of time? And,
most importantly, is there some vocabulary I should be using to look
this topic up? Thank you in advance for your time and your help. It
will be sincerely appreciated.

What say ye, o knowledgeable folk?

STOP!
There's no way to install the OS when you're having trouble installing
Ubuntu. You need to build from source code on a linux system. Look
here http://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/developer-guide#TOC-Preliminary-requirements
.
Secondly, one should be very happy to get anything working right at
all; expecting to watch Netflix movies is... well, it would be easier
trying to install Mac OS X on your T60 and installing Silverlight on
that. I appreciate your interest and ambition in installing and using
alternative OSes-- But there are many, many linux distributions that
are ideal for learning to do this. For partitioning I would suggest
downloading and using GParted http://gparted.sourceforge.net or even
better, SystemRescueCD at http://www.sysresccd.org

Netflix doesn't work on Chromium OS (the open source version). It only
works on Chrome OS on Netflix-blessed hardware that hasn't been
tampered with. You'd be much better off with Windows, unfortunately.
