Chrome Not Using My GPU!

Chrome is using a lot of my PC's CPU and RAM and it's making my PC freeze and lag and it's not using my GPU for Hardware Acceleration, how do I fix this?

Hi Stefan,

Thanks for providing these details. Chrome does make maximum use of the GPU in your system. Note the "Hardware accelerated" in the Graphics Feature Status. Hardware in this case refers to your GPU (your CPU is also hardware, but if that's being used we call it Software, for historic reasons). Sorry for the confusion. The "Native GpuMemoryBuffers" feature isn't necessary for Chrome to be using your GPU extensively, it's just a minor optimization.

That said, I see your GPU is not being used for VP9 video decoding. That's because the hardware itself doesn't have support for it. So this isn't a Chrome issue, and falling back to using the CPU to decode the video is perfectly normal.

Your CPU, an Athlon II X2 250, is a dual-core processor from 2009. So unfortunately it's not very powerful, and doing the video decoding will take a considerable amount of its computing capacity.

Note that the video encoding format being used is selected by the website (YouTube in this case), and you may be able to have it use a different one by adjusting the quality setting, using the cog button.

But it's not processing neither VP9 or H264 videos which my hardware supports you can see that on the pictures, the first picture where you can't see the video is a VP9 video and the other one that has a AVC1 codec is a H264 video and neither of them are using my hardware

Thanks for pointing that out. Indeed it looks like your hardware is in theory capable of decoding several video formats. However, I notice there are several workarounds active for dealing with bugs in this hardware or its driver. I'm not sure exactly to what extent that would increase the CPU load, but given the age of your CPU I'm not too surprised it gets stressed quite a bit by any amount of 1080p video processing. Note that the Athlon II does not support the SSE 4.1 instruction set extension, which offers many operations useful for video processing. So the code has to fall back to an even slower, or more taxing, way of computing.

I also noticed that you have some kind of plugin to download YouTube videos? This could significantly interfere with regular playback. Check if things are better when using Chrome Canary without any plugins.

Also, you could try Firefox or Microsoft Edge, to see if they are any better at utilizing your hardware combo. If they are, then Chrome is probably blacklisting something too aggressively and it's worth filing a bug.

I reinstalled Chrome with no extensions and with a guest profile and it's still the same and I also tried that for Canary Chrome and it's also the same
