This is on google chrome, but maybe its the same on chromium. I have may window and a few thousand tabs. When I start google chrome from the command line it crashes while creating the windows. It does this 3 times, and then the fourth time it succeeds.

I don't know exactly what it does differently the fourth time. My guess is that it creates the windows and tabs, but doesn't actual load all the tabs. I don't know if its just the quantity of loading so many tabs at once, or a particular tab that is the problem.

Can anyone provide some detail on what it does differently the 4th time? Is there a command line option for invoking this startup without going through the 3 crashes?

There's a failsafe in the GPU code, that if the GPU process crashes 3 times Chrome records that you have a buggy graphics driver and falls back to software rendering. But I don't think it records the GPU crash count between Chrome restarts - normally the browser stays up, it just flickers a bit as it tries to restart the GPU process 3 times in the background and then continues with software rendering. I could be wrong, though.

Does chrome://gpu and chrome://crashes show anything interesting?
