Chromium Does Not Play Video on Any Device

Hi all, question-

Is Chromium not supposed to play video?

I have chromium on a MacBook pro, on a Fedora workstation, on a Linux Mint Laptop, and it will not play video anywhere on any of those devices.

By anywhere I mean anywhere- youtube, cnn, embedded video in tweets. I'm assuming its an HTML5 issue.

Video works fine in Chrome on the same devices. Video also works in firefox.

As a specific example, 

The video in this tweet displays the message "We cannot play the video in this browser. Please try a different browser"

All these videos on CNN say "Something went wrong during native playback"

And actually I just went to check youtube and it works, which is new.

Can anyone offer help with this?

Chromium, out of the box, does not have non-free codecs (H.264, which is prevalent in non-Google videos. YouTube uses VP8 or VP9 - they are free codecs and so they are supported in Chromium out of the box).

Same about audio codecs, like AAC.

Also, I believe Chromium does not have Widevine out of the box, which is a DRM library (a way to prevent media piracy).

Whenever videos employ one of those, out of the box, Chromium will not be able to play them.

How do I fix the playback error?
