I get rid of it by defining my own search engine and making it default.

no. i use an unpacked extension for chrome new tab page which i set as default search engine with chrome://newtab?%s.

if i remember its on github under my user name named "tab".

that routes to nothing but the custom new tab page that doesnt search for anything.

because i dont want to search for something by default when i type in to omnibox but theres no way that i know of to turn off some kind of autosearch for typing in chromiums omnibox.
