Instant from Omnibox without pre-loading page?

Google's instant from omnibox feature auto completes your search and shows a drop down list of additional possible searches.  This is great.  However, it also loads the Google results page in the browser window.  Can I still have instant suggestions without loading the results in the browser window?

The main reason is that I often use the omnibox for calculator results.  I may be typing numbers into the omnibox calculator from the current web page - but as soon as I start to type, the page disappears and is replaced by Google results that I am not interested in.  I just want the result of the calculation to appear in the drop down list below the omnibox.

Thank you

Vernon

I believe calculator results in the omnibox are not instant search,
they are suggestions and will work even if you turn instant off. Did
you try that?

Actually, calculator results do not show up for me in the drop down
list whether or not instant is on; I wish they did. I remember them
appearing in that list before but now they do not. I can get the
calculator results by hitting enter. I would like to keep instant on
because I do use the auto-complete when making searches, but I don't
want the current web page to disappear while I type.

I've just tried to turn off instant for me and it still showed
calculator results in the omnibox. And search phrase still
autocompleted even when instant is off.

As to why it doesn't do that for you: check that your default search
engine is Google, i.e. the entry that's automatically populated when
Chrome is installed, not some google.com entry that you created
yourself.

I'm having the same problem as Vernon with the omnibox calculator. I was not getting results from the omnibox calculator, even when trying to force by using the = suffix, so I enabled instant. Now, the instant calculator works, any calculation I do takes me to a search page. Deleting the search returns me to the original page, but this is rather annoying. My previous setup definitely did not do this.

The catalyst for changing my setup (I just reinstalled chrome) is that google docs was telling me I had an out of date version. Strangely, going to 'about chrome' told me my version was up to date, but I decided to reinstall anyway.

Any idea what happened?

I have an edit to make. I had been testing the calculator with things like 10*2. Searching for "10*2=" does not produce a search result of "=20", but if you search for "10*2.1" or "10*2seconds" the calculator takes over and gives a result. I had been under the impression that using the equal sign would always force the calculator to take over, but I guess not.
