Hello Chromium-discuss,

I am baffled by the fact that in Debian 12 it is not possible to change the default new tab page.

The GUI route fails: The new tab page "Customize Chromium" button menu offers no option to change the url or content of the new tab page. The Settings have no such option.

OK, I am a dev, lets change the config files? Nope:

The Preferences json-file keys values homepage_is_newtabpage and chrome_url_overrides are simply overwritten on Chromium restart (to empty).

I mean wasn't this supposed to be an open source version, and not a google-bound version of this particular browser project?

- Instead, Chromium "calls home" to gstatic.com every time I open a new tab.

Regards, Kassu

I don't believe NEW TAB is a web page. Instead, it appears to be customizable by the browser implementation (e.g. Chrome, Edge, Brave, ...). Since Google developed Chromium browser and it needs a new tab page, then it makes sense they would just include theirs as default. I can't help you with customizing it.

Alternatively, you could enable the home button and use it instead of new tab.

Given this is a Debian-packaged version of Chromium, I think you need to ask for help from Debian first. The Chromium project doesn't offer a product called Chromium for users to install.
