How to change "google:baseURL" in Search Engines Preferences/Settings page

Hi all,

For some reason when I installed google chrome here in Sweden, my default search engine used by OmniBox became google.se which is expected. Then I went to preferences page (settings in windows) to change the default URL, I encounter 2 problems:

1) It seems like there is no way of viewing the value of "google:baseURL" token or change it. Am I missing something?

2) There is no way of viewing the entire search string other than selecting the entire text, copying it and pasting it to TextEdit (or somewhere else). I believe this is because "Search Engines" dialog box in Preferences has fixed size. 

Please take a look at the attachment and let me know if I am missing something.

1. Correct, this is a dynamic value. Whenever you start Chrome in a different country, Chrome will check for the current locale and change the value of the baseURL accordingly.

Google (and the other defaults) is a fixed, predefined search engine.

But my locale is set to US including my current location, datetime format, currency format.

The only thing that is not set to US is my timezone which is +1. 

So, I don't think Chrome is looking at the locale. It has to be something else.

It determines you locale by going to google.com and letting it determine your location and locale. Something like that.

IMHO, the design of the Options page (moving from separated dialog box
to a tab) in v.10 comparing to v.9, is a step back :( Now it takes a
lot of space (width particularly, I have to use horizontal scroll bar
every time to reach the 'X' button on the far right side), while
offering small or non of any improvements... I had similar problems
with google.com as default search engine too. Trying to adjust it to
my needs (e.g. by inserting '&num=100' option in URL line), I ended up
with removing it at all and then adding it back with my URL line...
Quite a frustrating experience.

Yes, the narrow box for URL is inconvenient (particularly if it's
covered by wide blue box "Make default", taking almost half of its
space). But what can we do? As you mentioned - one has to copy content
into TextEdit, make changes and copy it back then. And BTW, absence of
simple "Apply" and "Cancel" buttons commonly expected here is a
nuisance too. It's an example of when making things different in UI is
not always make it better :(

So, in short - remove default Google and then add a new Google back.
That will allow you to take control over it.

I am surprised they even let you remove the fixed Google, hehe. Why would they do that? a better choice would be to let your disable it, but removing it also removes the baseUrl feature. Oh, well.

Regarding the usage of the horizontal scroll bar in order to click on the X -

- Search crbug.com for an existing issue and star it. If you cannot find one, file a new issue at new.crbug.com. If you find an existing issue, please, do not add a "+1" or "Me too" or "Confirmed" (or similar) comment. It just wastes the time of Chrome engineers and sends unnecessary e-mails to all of the people who starred the issue.

- As a workaround - click on a search engine, then click on its icon and then press Delete with your keyboard. Now you do not have to get to the X. :)

Simplemente desperdicia el tiempo de los ingenieros de Chrome y envía correos electrónicos innecesarios para todas las personas que protagonizaron el tema.

- Como una solución - haga clic en un motor de búsqueda, a continuación, haga clic en su icono y luego pulse Borrar con el teclado. Ahora usted no tiene que llegar a la X. :)
