For some reason the ‌ HTML entity is no longer working correctly and displays as a square box in Chrome.

Here is a screenshot that shows the squares.

and here is an excerpt from the source code that is creating this kind of erroneous display

All too often did I pick up an eBook‌—‌even from major publishers‌—‌only to be frustrated and disappointed that margins

 The whole thing is an XHTML file that has the following header

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">

I've noticed that issues for a few weeks now. It used to work just fine, but now it is causing problems and I have people actually complaining about it because they seem to have the same issues.

Thanks for any ideas as to what might be going and how I can get this resolved in future builds of Chrome?

Which font are you using?
Times New Roman does not show a square, for example.

I am on Windows 7 and I also used the default font and did not see any squares.
Does the URL I posted (data:...) show you squares?

I am not defining any font. It is using the browser's default font, which would be Times New Roman.
I should, perhaps also point out that I am on a Mac and I am running Chrome version 41.0.2272.76

You can search crbug.com for an existing issue and star it. If you cannot find one, file a new issue using the "New issue" link on the same page.
Please, do not add a "+1" or "Me too" or "Confirmed" (or similar) comment. It just wastes the time of Chrome engineers and sends unnecessary e-mails to all of the people who starred the issue.

You can reply with a link to the found or created issue and might get triaged (and fixed) faster.

Thank you.

Yes, the one you sent shows the squares as well.
