I'm trying to implement a feature that allows a user to save a tab group as a bookmarks folder.

Currently there is no easy way to do so. This is a highly requested feature. Such functionality is useful when you have a lot of tabs, some of which are grouped into various groups, and even then they all take up too much horizontal space to fit into a screen. Or consider you have finished "working" with a tab group, and you want to save it for reference.

Existing solution is the chrome://flags/#tab-groups-save. This experimental feature from August 2021 allows one to save the groups into the Bookmarks Bar, but not bookmarks. Such saved groups still take up horizontal space, and move the bookmarks away. In my testing, the groups saved this way disappeared after an OS reboot (experimental feature indeed). From UX perspective I'd prefer my solution.

How it would work
When you Save Group to bookmarks, it will create a static snapshot of the tab group, and save it as a folder, in the bookmark path of user's choosing. User can choose to create a new folder or to overwrite existing one. When the tab group changes, it is not auto-saved. [optional] Chromium remembers the folder which was last time used to save the tab group. When you want to reopen a tab group from a bookmarks folder, the functionality is already there. Note if the tab group is already opened, opening the bookmarks folder as a tab group will make a new tab group.

The proposed UX is not the most pleasant one, but it's simple to use and implement.

Next steps
Your feedback is vital. Would you approve to have this feature in Chromium?
