My system OS is Xubuntu 10.10 64-bit.
I have a fairly major irritation and am wondering if there is already
a fix or one that could be implemented easily. I keep my desktop
language set as English while performing research that involves
collecting data from web sites in English, Japanese, Long and Short
form Chinese, and German on a daily basis. I HATE unnecessary use of
desktop real estate and I find that blue drop down nag bar that tells
me which other language I am reading now to be the ultimate in
irritation (Garsh, thanks! Thet thar "
co.cn" and "
co.jp" in the
address thingamajig really had me fooled, ayup yup yup!).
I confess that there are times when I hit a kanji / hanji or string
that I cannot immediately recall and which a quick switch to English
helps me power through without plodding off to look it up. The short
attention span and the tendency to wander off to do other work is my
problem, not yours, but if I get tucked into other work, I sometimes
lose my thread.
Being able to right click on an open part of the screen and click
"Translate to English" is a killer idea. For me it is one of the
first things to like about the browser. But, all of the solutions I
can think of to get rid of the blue bar, kills the on-screen
translation as well. It is greyed out when I try to use it. Setting
site specs to "Never Translate" also didn't do the trick.
Does a fix exist? If not, is there some other way to kill the nag bar
without losing the "Translate to English" option in the right click
menu? I am thinking that the best option would be a "Notify me when
websites are not in my default language." checkbox but have not Idea
where to start on something like that.
