Hello Fellow Developers!

We want to share some important updates around Chrome support for Android 8 Oreo and 9 Pie OS versions going forward.

What?

  • Support for Android 8 Oreo and 9 Pie (up to and including API level 28) in the Chromium code base is deprecated.

Why?

  • Oreo OS was last updated in October 2021. Pie OS was last updated in January 2022.

  • We value our users and want to keep them safe on the web, but maintaining Chrome on operating systems that are no longer supported reduces our ability to move the rest of Chrome forward. As other apps have done, we have decided to deprecate Oreo and Pie now that 8 and 7 years have passed since their respective initial releases.

When?

  • Chrome version 138 is the last release that will support Android Oreo and Android Pie. Version 139 and later releases will not be shipped to Oreo or Pie.

  • Version 139 is the first release which sets the minimum Android SDK version to Android 10 (API level 29). Version 139 will roll out to the Chrome stable channel in August 2025.

Next Steps

  • We can now start cleanup since version 138 has branched.

  • Meta cleanup tracking bug: crbug.com/425948259

  • For things you know you want to clean up, you can file bugs blocking the meta bug, or use the meta-bug directly for smaller efforts.

  • For questions or concerns, please reach out on this mail-thread.
