edit .bak file

Hi,

Ok no developer here, only want to tweak Chromium and Brave. 

I'm making a python script to decompile .bak file in order to edit it.

Only want to know if i'm in the right way, or is there a proper decompiler for this. 

Sorry for noob questions, will try to no bother anymore

What is a .bak file?
The Chromium checkout does not seem to have it (although maybe it is missing some compiled files) - https://source.chromium.org/search?q=file:%5C.bak&ss=chromium
