tl;dr; You can now use clangd remote-index service for chromium to reduce clangd’s local resource usage while editing/navigating Chromium code in your favorite editor and keep all the project-wide features working.

Clangd features like global code-completion, include insertion, cross-references, rename, call hierarchy etc. require a project-wide index. This index takes time proportional to building the project (~40 minutes on a 72 core machine in case of Chromium) and requires a considerable amount of RAM to serve (multiple GBs for Chromium code-base).

Clangd remote-index solves these problems by providing access to daily Chromium index snapshots. Source code for both server and client is a part of LLVM. The service is deployed on a GCP VM instance funded by Google with all the deployment scripts available here.

The service currently only indexes the main-branch and doesn’t contain symbol information for Mac & Windows specific code. Please let us know if this is important for you so that we can prioritize this type of support.

You can find full instructions for using and configuring the service here.

Feel free to file bugs/requests to clangd/chrome-remote-index.

I've been using this internally for a couple of weeks for Chrome OS chromium code indexing. It works great. Thanks for making it available!
